Race cancelled

Dear friends,
Our first words are about you, your families and friends… We wish all of you the very best of health in this strange and challenging times.
With our hearts full of sorrow, we have to tell you that Transportugal Europcar Race 2020 will not take place due to the current Covid-19 global crisis. The National Authorities have confirmed that we are forbidden by law to proceed! In light of the declaration of Portugal’s State of Emergency, Portuguese Cycling Federation has just announced that all cycling events in Portugal will be forbidden at least until May 31st:
Unfortunately this means that by reason of force majeure, we will have to cancel Transportugal Europcar Race 2020, for the first time in 18 years. The event was due to start on Sunday May 10th in Chaves and end on May 17th in Sagres, after 8 stages and 950km.
Most of the race preparations were done to receive the biggest group we have ever had… but the pandemic situation came to change all our plans. This is heart breaking all round… We know that all you riders have trained hard, had planned to visit Portugal, and were eager to cross the country with us.
We also know all a rider wants is to ride his bike and we are devastated that it has come to this. As an organisation that is proud of its country, our hearts are crying when we say that we have to cancel Transportugal. However, we are sure that this decision takes in full consideration the well being of riders, staff, communities, sponsors, companions, families and friends.
We thank our riders for their support from the start of the situation back in March. Together with all the riders, we were able to find a reasonable outcome in time, and we are sure in 2021 we will have an even greater event… Our aim was, and still is, to help you ride this journey!
We will all do our part, not spreading this virus all around the world. Portugal will be here for the years to come. TransPortugal is more than a race. We will be here, we will receive you again in the coming years. For now we have to keep fighting this pandemic situation, we will prevail, and we will ride our bikes again, crossing this unique country called Portugal, feeling the warmth of our people and our weather.
We wish you all the best… it will be wonderful to finally meet you in May 2021!
Keep Safe,
The TransPortugal Team
